Babette Deloe: Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat eggs and milk. That is their main source of B12. The 'organic' part makes no difference.Strict vegetarians (vegans) don't consume egg or dairy. Many non-dairy milks and margerines are fortified with B12 (in the UK it's the law). Marmite (if you like it) is also fortified with B12. You could also take a supplement....Show more
Lorelei Lilburn: vegetarians can eat eggs and milk, but not veganas for the B-12, there is a food ingrediant called nutritional yeast that contains high amounts of B vitamins. Also soymilk has many B vitamins. This and the many vegetables you need will easily take care of your need
Hwa Waterford: Savoury yeast flakes contain vitamin B12,so do eggs which is fine for a vegetarian to eat.
Malissa Porth: Eggs are a great food.
Wilfredo Muldoon: There are 4 types of vegetarians: 1) Lacto-vegetarian a vegetarian who drinks milk 2) Ovo-vegetarian - a vegetarian who eats eggs. 3) Lacto-Ova V! egetarian - the vegetarian who eats and drinks both milk and eggs. 4) the Pure Vegetarian - who eats/drinks neither eggs nor milk. Then there's the Vegan - who is a pure vegetarian and he doesnt use animal products like leather shoes, belts, caps, etc....Show more
Keneth Mailhot: yeast extract like Marmite
Azalee Ahrendes: Vegetarians can eat egg and milk if they wish so don't need additional B12.
Alisia Sutphen: Most Vegetarians eat eggs and have milk. Its Vegans who don't eat anything that has come from an animal. ie. eggs, milk, cheese, etc. It all depends on taste and opinions.B12 Substitutes are Fortified breakfast cerealsYogurt, plain, skim, with 13 grams protein per cupMilkEgg, whole, hard boiledTake a look at this website, it has some ideas for veggies:http://www.vegetarianaction.org.au/Living/VLB12.ht......Show more
Jackson Esmiol: Cabbage
Benny Stehno: You can eat seaweeds, such as kelp, wild blue green algae, spirulina, and other sup! er greens. They al have B12 in them. Research the benefits of ! sea plants and their B12 content. Blue green algae makes you feel great and is a natural source. Raw milk has it too. Interestingly, while eggs are vegetarian and contain B12, they also contain substances which block the absorption of it. Pasteurizing the milk, while still containing the vitamin, also contains substances which block absorption. Raw milk doesn't have that problem. However, you don't have to drink raw milk just to get B12. Sea vegetables and algae are the best sources in my opinion....Show more
Cody Petrulis: Vegetarians can eat eggs and drink organic milk and they can get sufficient B12 from eggs and dairy (that includes organic milk). Vitamin B12 has been known to store in your body for up to 30 years. So unless you go 30 years without Vitamin B12, you're unlikely to get a B12 deficiency. Nutritional yeast and fortified breakfast cereals are also good vegetarian B12 sources, however they're fortified with it. Hope this helped.
Erin Arron: Vegeta! rians generally eat Diary Products and Eggs etc but steer well clear of Meat and Fish. Vegans do not eat any animals or food deriving from Animals such as Dairy etc. There is always B12 Vit Supplements, however check this out from Veg Society on B12 - Good sources of vitamin B12 for vegetarians are dairy products or free-range eggs. ½ pint of milk (full fat or semi skimmed) contains 1.2 µg. A slice of vegetarian cheddar cheese (40g) contains 0.5 µg. A boiled egg contains 0.7 µg. Fermentation in the manufacture of yoghurt destroys much of the B12 present. Boiling milk can also destroy much of the B12. Vegans are recommended to ensure their diet includes foods fortified with vitamin B12. A range of B12 fortified foods are available. These include yeast extracts, Vecon vegetable stock, veggieburger mixes, textured vegetable protein, soya milks, vegetable and sunflower margarines, and breakfast cereals The only reliable unfortified sources of vitamin B12 are meat, dairy p! roducts and eggs. There has been considerable research into possible pl! ant food sources of B12. Fermented soya products, seaweeds and algae have all been proposed as possible sources of B12. However, analysis of fermented soya products, including tempeh, miso, shoyu and tamari, found no significant B12. Spirulina, an algae available as a dietary supplement in tablet form, and nori, a seaweed, have both appeared to contain significant amounts of B12 after analysis. However, it is thought that this is due to the presence of compounds structurally similar to B12, known as B12 analogues. These cannot be utilised to satisfy dietary needs. Assay methods used to detect B12 are unable to differentiate between B12 and it's analogues, Analysis of possible B12 sources may give false positive results due to the presence of these analogues. Researchers have suggested that supposed B12 supplements such as spirulina may in fact increase the risk of B12 deficiency disease, as the B12 analogues can compete with B12 and inhibit metabolism. The current nutrition! al consensus is that no plant foods can be relied on as a safe source of vitamin B12....Show more
Jeremy Donohue: Tofu, tempeh, miso, yogurt have some but don't provide enoughTake a vitamin supplement because most meat have it so if you don't eat meat you will have a deficiency
Launa Weingarten: Vitamin B12 is unusual because unlike other B vitamins, it can be stored by the body. There's a lot of misinformation about B12. Seaweeds were thought to contain B12 but have since been found to be an unreliable source. Vegetarians get plenty of B12 from dairy and eggs. A single glass of dairy milk has over the full daily requirement. Eggs provide a significant amount of this vitamin. B12 is absent in plant foods, so vegans must eat fortified breakfast cereals and drink fortified soymilk. The alternative is taking a dietary supplement. The B12 added to vegan foods is derived from bacteria, as B12 is synthesised by microbes. It's importance in the human diet should NOT be! underestimated, as deficiency is rare, but can cause severe neurologic! al (nerve) damage and a type of anaemia. Nevertheless, a well planned vegan or vegetarian diet will supply adequate B12. Meat is not the only source....Show more
