Newton Fedorko: My rule of thumb is, track all of your maintenance costs, including oil changes, air filters, repairs, tires, etc. Keep track of the total, once this total reaches half of what you paid for the car, it is time to trade it in. On a car that requires normal maintenance and no repairs, you will keep the car for a very long time. If you have a lot of repairs, you will get rid of the car quickly. This is a good indicator of quality in a car.
Lourie Mcroberts: Learn how to fix it yourself and reduce your repair bill by about 70%
Antonia Quinnett: Define "practical and fits our lifestyle". Does she want two suv's? Does she want you to drive a cheap car? Does she not want you to have a car you like? Nothing wrong with driving a paid for car. $2.4 K a year, would that be cheaper than payments?
Toya Braskett: Sell the wife and keep the car.
Lucille Saetteurn: Well the general rule is if the repairs cost more than 50% of the cars valu! e once it's repaired it would be better to replace it. This is according to Consumer Reports. I don't know what a 12 year old BMW is worth. But if you've worked hard to keep this car in good running condition and it still looks good and it's comfortable to drive I'd keep it. I'm assuming the cost of the repairs can be paid for without too much financial hardship. Your argument is based on the cost to replace it. Ask you wife what her idea is of a good replacement car for your commute. Price out the car. Can you pay cash for this car or would you have to go into debt for 3 years to buy it? Now compare the total cost to buy and own that new car for the next 3 years compared to the cost to repair the BMW and estimated future repair costs over the next 3 years. Consider the fuel costs for each car, the insurance costs as well. Once you do the math and see it on paper in front of you I'm guessing the results will show you that buying a replacement car will cost you more over th! e long term. Keeping the car you like, the car you know, the c! ar you want to drive will actually save you money....Show more
Jude Kennelly: Sell it and get a decent used car. Try not to put too much on the credit card.
Logan Bero: I can understand you wanting to keep it it's a good car , I suggest you try hiring a car for your wife or look for for a cheap car that has low running costs , as far as insurance goes there's a few companies that offer multi car deals , I would try to keep your car though
Vickie Clampett: I suggest you keep the car. Like you said its paid for and the repairs are going to cost you much less than a car note. And you said your only using it for commuting so your the only one thats going to drive it. You can suggest to her it will save you more money in the long run to fix it verses buy a new one.
Elden Dedon: sell it cars getting cheaper
Violette Vanek: Well it depends on how much the car is worth. It you are spending $2,400.00 a year on it then it might be a liability. Now on the! other hand, it would be stupid to buy a SUV if you drive it as a commuter car it would be a bad investment to get an SUV with horrible gas mileage. If you are going to buy another car you could buy a new 2014 Toyota Corolla or something in that market. I don't know your finances so it really depends. If you are asking for my opinion I would either buy an efficient new car, or a used car with decent gas mileage.Hope this helped,We have a YouTube channel about cars if you are interested: CarConfections...Show more
Lorine Helwick: Sell it :)
Jefferson Sarson: Sell it. The car will give you grief along with your wife.
Merna Fauset: As a general rule it is cheaper to fix the car you've got than to buy another. A luxury car ought not cost $2400 in repairs each year. Do you exaggerate a bit?
Coleman Deliberato: My brother drives older Beamers. Unless you can do the repairs yourself, the BMWS will cost you not only in parts but over $75/hour in labor to ! fix! You'll probably spend over $2000 a year to maintain if you don't d! o the repairs yourself ! In just one to two years, your behind the eight ball financially, plus the nagging wife!!!! Cut bait now, get a slightly used Honda or Nissan and your headaches with the wifey will diminish! BMW parts alone are as expensive as Mercedes ! Pay to play or pay less and keep the peace!!!...Show more
