Stephnie Patout: Bituminous coal is associated with swamp or marsh environments. Siltstone is most often associated with either distal shallow marine environments or fluvial overbank deposits (think flood plains). Silt can also commonly be found in deltaic flood plains, which are themselves sometimes associated with swamps and marshes. Therefore, siltstone and coal would suggest a swampy environment within a coastal plain.Fine-grained, fossiliferous sandstone could either be associated with fluvial, lacustrain, or marine environments.
