do you read up on general care of your bird?

Angel Klym: yes i doi research all of my pets in full before i get themi make sure im prepared with all their food/cages/home/tank before i get them and have them settle inits really important to know all you can about your pets before getting them. it can be a mistake or ur relationship could turn into a treasure. whenever i have a question about my pets, if it is quick/in a hurry/want experience or different opinions/quick facts-yahoo answers. if i know it requires a bit of extensive research-internet and books...Show more

Rosie Travino: Yes, I am very big on researching a species before buying it. And I am always researching and discovering new things and more recent up to date information. I've never stopped learning and will continue doing so.I check out countless bird websites, buy -at least- two books on the specific species because info contradicts each other as well as books and DVDs on bird care and behaviour in general, and I ask people who own birds a! bout their experience (Yahoo answers is one place for this). When I decided to get a rainbow lorikeet, I didn't get one until 6 years later and during that time I did heaps of research. But there was still so much I didn't know when I bought him, and I have learnt so much since then too. I plan on getting a macaw, I've been researching them for at least a year and will continue to research for a few more years. Plus I'm meeting as many macaws as I can find (difficult in Australia) to see if I 'click' with the species.I ask so many questions about birds on Yahoo answers. Some of them may appear to be a bit generalised and basic, maybe. I usually have a reason for it being that way, and am not totally clueless on what I'm asking. It's mostly about getting many opinions from different people about a specific situation instead of just the one from a book or website. But also keeping in mind that some people just don't know what they are talking about when they answer, but some g! ive great answers....Show more

Filiberto Ranalli: ATV_gi! rlI'm glad I'm not the only one! so you ride atv's eh? whatcha got? I have a yamaha kodiak 450 pretty sweet.

Jorge Gerrero: I actually read up on all my birds (on the internet) prior to buying any of them. Wouldnt want to buy something I couldnt care for or in the long run deal with.

Saran Stealy: I couldn't of said it any better my self, I get so frustrated at some of these questions and the main ones that really make me mad are the ones " HELP i just got my parakeet a few hours ago and it is just sitting in it's cage doing nothing" or " help i just got my parakeet and it flies frantically when i stick my hands in the cage or runs all around the cage so i can't grab it" WELL DUHH you just yanked a parakeet out of a cage that was with at least 10 other birds of its own kind, and put it in a box or a bag( i actually brought one home in a lunch sack with holes in it, (I NEVER went back to that pet shop), and stuck in in a cage all alone and now you got ur big ol! e hands all up in it's space , it is scared, and doesn't know what you're trying to do to it, and since you're coming from above it MOST of the time it thinks your a predator so yea it's going to try and get away! Those 2 right there shows the person did NO research because EVERY single website I've ever went to said When you first bring your bird home it'll need time to adjust to its new environment, and it will be scared and quiet and no you prob. won't see it eating but it actually is !in my opinion only a very ignorant person would purchase A animal any animal doesn't even have to be a bird, and never do research on it and they know nothing at all about the animal they just went out and bought & I only feel sorry for the animal !!I read up on Budgie Parakeets and Quaker Parrots for over a year before I bought either one, and I've got 4 Budgie parakeets now and One Quaker ( going to get another one eventually) and I still read up on them and do research on them DAILY !! ! AND i still learn new things every day but i knew allot more then just ! the basics before i even bought mine Most people these days just want to run out and buy the pet and then have every one and their brother tell them step by step how to take care of it , Or in simpler terms they want Spoon fed all the way through the process...Show more

Joel Feagler: I've on no account had a parrot however have performed lots of study on proudly owning them. I consider they're such a lot best for a unmarried character who plans on staying unmarried (like if you are older), are a loved ones that does not plan on having extra youngsters, or a pair that does not plan on having any youngsters or the children are already grown up. The motive being is that plenty of occasions they on no account get used to new "loved ones" participants and will truthfully end up jealous and protecting. They also are no longer birds for humans who plan on journeying plenty or who journey plenty for paintings. They get very, very lonely and so they bond with you prefer loopy.! You additionally need to be ready to have the hen for the leisure of your existence. You best desire to get a parrot from a hand raised child. YOU MUST GO THE BREEDER"S HOUSE AND SEE WHERE THE BIRD WAS RAISED. The breeder must no longer have greater than round a dozen parrots on the such a lot and must be hand elevating not more than perhaps 6 or so. It'd be a pleasant suggestion in case you might consult with commonly even as it is being hand raised considering the fact that it is a HUGE bonding time. If you realize birds that breeder's house that appear diseased, lacking lots of feathers, or are very agressive, I'd prevent that breeder. There is a change among breeders and parrot rescuers. You desire a child that's simply being used to cast meals whilst you convey it house. Be ready to pay ALOT of cash for the hen specifically if it is a very the cash (you'll be able to inform by means of what number of birds she has). If you pay attention birds in different rooms, ask t! o peer them. If she declines, instantly depart, it is a HUGE WARNING SI! GN! What sort of parrot did you desire? Prices fluctuate dramatically. Make definite you might have anything in writing that this hen used to be born within the U.S. and no longer smuggled. You must get a few variety of well being guarantee that's greater than forty eight hrs.! You need to be certain you're fiancially equipped for the rate of the hen, vet expenditures (sure, they must have consistent verify-ups!), a huge cage (appear for a used one in well situation to save cash), tons of toys, and tons of meals and nutrional treats. They don't seem to be low priced pets. Also, do not be dissapopinted if it on no account learns to speak. Cockatoos are the quality talkers so far as parrots move. If you best desire a hen for speaking, get a mynah hen! Before you're taking the plunge into parrot possession, why do not you check out proudly owning a cockatiel, monk parrot, or canary for a 12 months to be certain that is anything you quite desire. PARROTS ARE VERY NOISY so that ! you need to be ready for plenty of no longer so nice noises throughtout the day and do not get one in case you are living in an rental comples 'rationale the associates WILL REPORT YOU! And like I stated, make undoubtedly definite that this isn't only a passing fancy like whilst you needed to have that targeted toy whilst you have been a child and per week later, you had no curiosity! GOOD LUCK! Let me recognise what you make a decision and permit me recognise what sort of parrot you are occupied with....Show more

Somer Distilo: I do more than read up. I've got an entire Favorites folder of bird-related websites. I've been a member of several parrot-related forums. I go to bird fairs whenever they're within reasonable driving distance (Atlanta's not too far away), and I've got an avian vet right in my neighborhood should I need one.My three birds are like my kids (and I don't even HAVE kids). They EAT better than I do, have more TOYS than I did when I was a kid, and a! re spoiled rotten -- like any self-respecting kid would be....Show more!

Collin Barter: OMG. I was thinking the same thing! Some of the the questions up here make me think, "that poor creature!" How can people take in pets just for the sake of having one?!? And without asking general questions before taking them home?! I have worked in the pet business for over ten years and have been known for refusing to sell animals to ignorant people! lol! If they can't tell me the basics about the animal they want to take home, it does not go out the door with them. Especially, those parents who buy animals for there kids to "shut them up". I had a man come in asking for feeder goldfish for his daughter's fish bowl (which they don't belong in a bowl, that's for a different post) but anyway, his daughter is responsible for the fish he says and here she comes around the corner, maybe all of 2 years old, in a diaper! She feeds and cleans this bowl?!? I asked him and he says nope, she usually forgets to feed them and never changes the water and when the! y die, I just buy her new ones! AHHHHH!!!!! I kicked him out of the store!!!! People! gesh!...Show more

Donnell Nocella: hi!Lindsay-Joyes I do.always on the look out for new info.

Nelly Kikuchi: Ok gonna rant here.....sorry in advanceI never stop reading up on my birds, ekkie, sun conure & cockatiel & I am a bit dissapointed myself when I see some questions on the forum taht even a first time bird owner should know or at least should know before getting the bird. However, having said that, I admit to having no knowledge myself with the first bird I bought, but I was eager & got stuck into everything then. What I find the most disturbing is people who say they're experienced in any way & give poor advice based on only what they were told rather than what they research themsleves. To be fair on these people, when you buy a bird, the person you're buying off you really do expect to be experienced & give good knowledgable advice. Pitty this doesn't alway happen.I also! find in a few forums many people get stuck in one old rut. They reasea! rch what is good knowledge & research & said to be so at the time but they don't keep up the research on a regular basis. Your own research needs to be kept upto date as it does continually change as experts learn more & more about specific species. I have noticed in a few places people give old advice that was apparently great advice then, but not so good now & this can become a big problem. Another little pet hate I have is many people talking 'general parrot' when it comes to certain care & you can't do that. Each species should be looked at indevidually with diet & care because they do differ a lot. I have actually noticed "experts" doing this quite often. These are the poeple that non experts look upto to the most for the right advice.Ok, final pet hate...(really really sorry, another "expert" quirk)....this comes from the non specific species again. Offering general parrot diets & not actually fully researching specific parrot species. There are a few out there that h! ave a very different diet requirements to 'general' parrots but I have noticed experts don't pick this up simply because they haven't worked with these specific species at all or rarely, so they get thrown in the general parrot catigory. This to me is dissapointing cos again everyone takes in experts advice.Anywho, you can't stop researching your parrot species, there's always a lot of new things you come across that you never knew. There is also a lot of things you need to dig deeper with to find out what's actually correct, or better suited to your parrot, ratehr than just doing what one book reads up on.I have a VERY old cockatoo book & I would never sell this book to the public, nor would I offer any of the advice in it now, it's appauling to read....What really bugs me is experts telling parrot owners to not research the net for their parrot info cos 99% of it is incorrect! This is far from the truth. Yep, there's some info out there that's complete BS, but sure isn't ! 99% of the net. And all people have to do is continue sifting through f! orums & websites before they start to see what is BS & what isn't. Hmmm, is my website in the 99% BS? Nope!Okey dokey, rant over :-)))...Show more
